Magic Looping Gussets

Awhile ago a forum member on KH had asked how do you work the gusset and Magic Loop? I tried to explain how to do it and then went off to find pictures to help; I soon realized there are no pictures really showing this. There might be a book out there somewhere but I just kinda figured it out on my own. I didn’t want to stop and swap to dpns for that section and use tons of stitch markers. So this is how I work a sock with a gusset on Magic Loop.

First you work your Heel flap and heel turn, this is showing the WS of the heel flap so you can see that the instep sts just rest on the cable, they are not touched during this process.

This is the RS of the work and how it would face you after working the last heel turn row, you are now wanting to pick up sts going down the left side (where the tip of the needle is). You won’t slide the heel sts down on the cable you leave them there.

Here is the gusset sts picked up along with the heel sts. After you pick up the last gusset st (that is always the little triangle st for me it closes up the gap), you slide these sts onto the cable and get ready to work the instep sts.

You work across your instep sts

Now you are ready to pick up the other side’s gusset sts, you slip the instep sts down on the cable to free up the tip.

Here they are picked up and now ready to work across the heel turn sts and other gusset sts, you do not slide anything down on the cable. This now becomes Needle 1 you can place a stitch marker ½ way between the heel sts to mark your new rounds if you need to.

Work across the heel sts and gusset sts, as you can see the instep sts is waiting on the other half of the cable to be worked later. Remember your gusset sts and heel sts are on Needle 1.

Now you are ready to work the instep sts and this is your needle 2.

You continue this manner all the way down the foot remembering to work your gusset decrease sts when needed.

I hope this helps some to anyone out there wondering how you do this : )

I hope you all have a wonderful day of knitting!

Well I don't magic loop... I think it's beyond my skills, lol. But you are definitely a natural born teacher. Very nice pictures and explanation.
That yarn looks nice and cozy too.

Happy Knitting!

Thank you, I never really thought I would be a good teacher so to say I have gift shocked me. I figured I was to random in my thoughts lol.

Oh Magic Loop looks hard but it really isn't. I think you would find it very easy to do : )

thanks so much for your instructions! i have got as far as the point where you pick up the second set of heel flap stitches, but i'm confused--where should the working yarn be before and after picking these stitches up? and which end of the flap are you starting from when you pick up? i have tried it both ways and neither has worked!! (i've never made socks before, so this is completely new to me)

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your comment and questions. I'll try to help ya, its not hard and once you get the first heel down the second will be a walk in the park : )

1rst Question: When picking up the second set of sts for the Gusset your yarn will be coming off of the last worked instep stitch. These stitches now rest on your cable like in the 6th picture (its not very clear)

2nd Question after you pick up the second set of gusset sts the yarn will be coming from the last gusset st you pick up. These sts will now be with your heel flap sts and the first set of gusset sts you picked up, it will look like the 7th picture.

3rd Question-Typically you will work a knit row on your heel stitches this will put you on the left side so the first set of Gusset sts should be picked up on the left side of the heel flap : )

If you have anymore questions please let me know and hope this helps : )
