Ike bothers us

My first blog post about the last week was really long and then you added in all the photos and it was just crazy. I decided to cut it back and just let the pictures tell the story.

All in all it ended up being a week of being thankful, and realizing what wonderful n’bors, friends, and family we have. Sure by Friday we were getting tired of it all and I found myself saying over and over again what I had been telling the kids all week, except this time to myself… but we have our house, no damage, no one hurt, it’s not snowing, it’s not hot, we didn’t lose our freezer food or much of our fridge food, so we don’t have hot water/power/internet at least we didn’t get hit like other places.

I think the longest part was at night, it just seemed to drag on. We had plenty of flashlights, candles, and I had picked up flameless candles awhile back. They came in handy with the kids being afraid to sleep with nothing on.

It started out as a nice fall day, although it was hotter than normal and a tad on the sticky side. We noticed the winds but thought storms would be coming soon, too cool us down.

The first sign we had of the winds were getting a little stronger than normal was when I found my rocking chair and the gutter out in the yard.

We also noticed that one of the trees was losing limbs so we moved the cars closer to the garage and hoped it passed soon.

We had lost our internet connection first, then our n'bor came down, he wanted to let us know about the power lines so the kids wouldn't go near them. It was prolly 40 mins later that we lost our power.

We did wake up to a cooler day and this is what I found on my first venture outide. As the winds grew strong and stronger we could hear the trees cracking. Thankfully none fell on our house or n'bors houses.

This tree was behind our house and it snapped off, thankfully it fell to the side and not on the house.

Thankfully, a friend had coolers we could borrow, each day it was fun to track down ice. Also, I had just went grocery shopping for 2wks on Friday, but another n'bor took my freezer items down to her mom, who still had power.

It was really chilly this week in the mornings and nights, this was Yeager looking for sun. He would just move along with it.

I tried to heat water up the first day but it was just to chilly out, so it didn't work. Cold showers are very re-freshing!!

Isaiah was home from school on Monday and Tuesday, I think school really helped him this week lol. They helped us clean up the limbs and Tues we were able to go to a n'bors house for warm showers.

Roo was so good last week she really was just happy playing with her dolls and swinging on the rope swing.

Wednesday we had issues with our phone line but they were fast to fix it. JD also came in with this and we sat it up. It didn't get super warm like they said it would, but it was enough for the kids to take showers with that night. On Thursday, JD came in and took us to his aunt's house, we all enjoyed warm showers/bubble baths.

Friday was a pretty day and we were starting to hear power trucks on the main road. This WWII bomber was flying over head.

When we seen the lights coming we all got very excited. He told our n'bor that he was just checking the down line and it would be tomorrow (Sat.) before he came back. Roo started yelling "Please, give us Power" "Thank you, Mr.Power truck" and other things, he then told my n'bor he would try and get back to us later that night.

At 2am we were waken by the sound of power coming back on! Thank you!!

On Sat. it was hard to decide between cleaning, hot bath, laundry, or what first. The hot bath won and when I came out little Roo asked if she could take a bubble bath too. I made biscuits for breakfast and we cleaned up the house. My freezer items were still with the n'bor's mom so our first meal with power was Hot soup and grilled cheese!

Maybe the power going off brought them closer together? I doubt it that is as close as they get to one another without fighting. : )

We saw the guy walking around early Saturday and Roo ran out to thank him, she thought it was the power guy. It ended up being Time Warner and that poor guy, he had to find better tires first, then was up and down the poles so many times, but he stayed till he figure out the problem and we had internet back a little before 5.

We are back to having peaceful fall days

I did knit a bit but nothing like I thought I would. I started the above sock to see which it will match.

Then I finished the pair of gloves that I had started back in Jan.

Thank you all for your kind wishes and words. Our hearts go out to those who lost much more than we could imagine and continue prayers for those who have suffered loss from Ike. As for OH, today people are still waiting for power.

I hope you all have a great day of knitting!!

Glad to read that you guys are back up and running. No hot showers for a week! I can't imagine. It's almost like being on Survivor :)
Tomato soup and grilled never tasted better I'm sure.
And the fingerless mitts are adorable as are the socks. I like the colors on those mitts

P.S.
Thanks for you wonderful comments as well :)

Thank you! The Mitts are from a blue I dyed and a pink that Julie dyed. She held a contest and won, wohooo!

Roo has wanted a hot bubble bath every day since Saturday lol.

I live in East Texas about 100 miles inland and thought it was strange that we were hit by the hurricane here (I'm about 40 miles from Houston and probably 100 from Galveston). If I looked at your profile correctly, you're in Ohio, right??

Any way, I know what you went through. Our power was off for 7 days as well but no damages to report.
